When interviewing friends and people on the street the response to the gray-on-gray trend was pretty consistent. After talking with three of my friends who I consider to be knowledgeable and stylish I felt as though the trend is on its way to the masses.

Rance Nix:

“I think the gray-on-gray trend is on the rise. Personally, I love gray, but I mostly use it as a layering piece such as a T-shirt. I wouldn’t normally wear multiple shades of gray within one outfit. I have started to see celebrities such as Kanye West wear it though. It’s something that the more I see it pulled off well, the more comfortable I get with the idea of it.”

Travis Harris:

“Gray-on-gray really isn’t my thing at the moment. I do own a lot of gray, but it’s mostly hoodies and T-shirts. A lot of what I wear is influenced by street wear, and what’s big in street wear right now is leather and black. I could definitely see gray-on-gray making a debut soon though because black-on-black will eventually have to subside a little bit”.

Joseph Arnold:

“I consider my personal style to have more of a classic look, and maybe even a bit of prepster thrown in as well. I could see myself trying out the gray-on-gray look when it comes to suiting, but I don’t really think I would be too comfortable wearing contrasting grays with, say, a T-shirt and jeans.”

I also spoke with the menswear manager at the J.Crew in Lenox Mall who offered his opinion for the gray-on-gray trend.

Bobby Coles-Broche (J.Crew):

“I personally love gray-on-gray when it comes to contrasting patterns and shades of gray in suiting, and suiting accessories such as ties and pocket squares. It’s a sharp look if it is done right. On the other hand, I’m not sure that most men are comfortable with gray-on-gray on an everyday basis with items such as T-shirts, pants, sweaters, and jackets. I imagine it would be another year or so before the trend catches on with mass fashion”.
One particular person that I confronted was a barista at Two Story Coffee House.

Nathan Nerswick:

“I actually didn’t even mean to wear gray-on-gray, so it’s funny that you confronted me about it. I was wearing a sweater most of the day, and didn’t really intend on taking the sweater off which is why I wore the gray T-shirt underneath. I normally would never wear this out purposefully as an outfit. I also don’t know how soon this will catch on in menswear. I could see it catching on with trendy and fashionable people, but I don’t really see it taking hold with general consumers”.
